CNC Machinist, Prototypes - Tesla (Fremont, CA)

Tesla’s Prototype Machine Shop is seeking a skilled and highly motivated CNC Machinist to join the team and contribute to our mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.

The Prototype Machine Shop Team provides engineers and technicians across the organization with machined components as well as insight into machining and other adjacent manufacturing processes. Through the Prototype Shop’s efforts, we help enhance components and systems design by bringing conceptual ideas to the physical world. Engineering initiatives we contribute towards range widely from pre-production vehicles, energy systems, artificial intelligence, and other future-shaping products.

Responsibilities:

  • Preparation and machining of components and assemblies to engineering specifications

  • Set up and operate a variety of CNC mills and lathes including but not limited to vertical mills, 5 axis mills, and lathes with live tooling

  • Cut material, build tooling, set fixtures, prove and run programs, deburr and finish parts per Programmer direction

  • Machine complex components to tight tolerances in various materials with tight deadlines

  • Use various inspection and measurement tools to validate your work

  • Tracking and documentation of machining processes and results when necessary

  • Provide feedback to engineers, senior machinists and programmers on design and process improvement

  • Root cause analysis and problem solving

  • Work as a team by openly collaborating with engineers and fellow team members

  • Proactively communicate with engineers, management, and other team members through verbal, email, text, phone and other internal electronic communications

  • Maintain shop equipment as required

  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace

  • Participate in continuous improvement projects for the shop and Tesla

  • Perform all assignments in accordance with EH&S and security policies

Key Qualifications: 

  • HS diploma or equivalent

  • 3+ cumulative years of machine shop experience and/or classes and training

  • Experience operating and setting up CNC mills and lathes

  • Experience with basic shop tools and machines (manual mill, engine lathe, drill press, bandsaw, belt sanders, hand tools etc.)

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of engineering drawings and documents

  • Thorough knowledge in the use of measurement and inspection tools such as calipers, micrometers, gauge pins, bore-micrometers, optical comparator, etc.

  • Positive energy and attitude, with a passion for prototyping and machining

  • Thrives in a fast paced, constantly evolving environment with tight deadlines

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Good analytical and mathematical skills

  • Good mechanical aptitude

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively both independently and as a team with minimal supervision

  • Ability to remain positive and focused in demanding and stressful situations

  • Basic experience with common Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Maintains a growth mindset

  • Flexible with ability to work overtime on short notice based on strategic needs of the company

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Desired Skills:

  • Lathe, Mill-Turn, EDM and/or large format CNC experience

  • Experience cutting a wide range of materials

  • Machine maintenance

  • Ancillary manufacturing/prototyping experience
