About the role

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Brooklyn Museum as a Project Architect/Planner. Brooklyn Museum is in the process of undertaking a building-wide program of renovation, construction and energy efficient modernization projects to align its physical environment with its vision for the future.

The Project Architect/Planner at the Brooklyn Museum will report to the Museum Architect and will participate in all phases of the planning, design and construction of capital projects. They will be responsible for providing support during the study, analysis, programming, design, presentation, staging, and construction for large capital projects. Additionally, they will have responsibility for documentation and implementation of smaller projects within the Museum.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist Museum Architect and the Capital Projects Executive in the design and execution of planning and construction projects, including:

    • Programming and conceptual studies

    • Presentations and renderings

    • Project planning and phasing strategies

    • Design and documentation of construction projects through all phases

    • Existing conditions review and documentation

    • Construction administration tasks from bidding through project close-out

    • Assist in providing space planning and project management for capital projects including transitional relocation during renovations and construction

  • Assist in management of drawing archives and electronic files used for facilities management/planning

  • Assist in a variety of research and design projects

  • Present new ideas, give them the appropriate follow up; and if necessary make adjustments

  • Coordinate activity of other departments involved (loading dock access, freight elevator usage, telephone installation, cleaning, facility shutdowns, etc.)

  • Support Operations and Logistics by providing drawings, building data and previous project documentation

  • Take responsibility for the safety and protection of all related Museum buildings, collections, personnel, museum visitors, and equipment

  • Assist with fire and safety team functions as deemed necessary by the Fire and Life Safety Director

Qualifications:

  • Professional degree in Architecture required.  Graduate degree preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 years’ professional experience with all project phases, including: programming, conceptual design, coordination between trades, documentation and construction administration

  • Familiarity with art exhibition spaces, workplaces, public circulation, amenities, storage and exterior envelope

  • Familiarity with historic buildings

  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills, ability to assist with building consensus among multiple constituencies, design skills, team work, personal drive and the ability to work independently on multiple tasks

  • Demonstrates commitment to collaborative achievement with in-house and external teams

  • Experience with construction documents, sustainable building practices, existing conditions surveys, presentation preparation, graphic design and renderings

  • Knowledge of planning, design, and construction processes

  • Intermediate to Advanced Computer skills with

    • Autodesk: AutoCAD, Revit, FormIt

    • Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Project

    • Adobe: Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat DC, PowerPoint

 

Reports to: Museum Architect

Position type: Full-time

Salary: $82,742.40

Union status: Non-Union

FLSA status: Exempt

Schedule: 35 hours per week, Monday–Friday, 9 am–5 pm
