Human-Centered Design Specialist - National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC)
This position is in the Visitor Experience and Evaluation (DDVE) department of the National Gallery of Art. The Human-Centered Design Strategist focuses on putting audiences at the center of the National Gallery's decision-making and experience design process. Reporting to the Chief Experience Officer, this position's primary role is to facilitate the translation of insights from a robust audience research program into actionable improvements that enhance the audience experience.

Salary:
$117,962 - $181,216 per year (NF 13-14)
As the Human-Centered Design Strategist, you will:
Design immersive, museum-based exercises, focused on improving the organizations collaborative efforts and workflow, to better develop new and innovative ideas.
Create meaningful and interactive discussions with staff, volunteers, stakeholders and audience members to solve problems and share ideas. Research audience engagement issues and problems faced by the organization.
Interview house staff, stakeholders, volunteers and audience members, to identify problem areas. Analyze data and feedback from a variety of audience engagement efforts.
Design teachable methods of improvement through workshops and discussions. Prepare presentations and materials for house staff to learn about audience engagement and the principles, methods and strategies behind it.
Work collaboratively with front of house staff and stakeholders and develops feasible, human-centered, and comprehensive service strategies that enhance the visitor experience and improve staff and volunteer work processes.
Create balance between business level challenges of the organization and a service-oriented vision to be "of the nation and for all the people." Establish and grow a human-centered facilitation and design practice that is rigorous, sustainable, and impactful.
Adapt design tools to align with the National Gallery of Art values and ethics with empathy and thoughtful care. Foster a culture of learning, shared language, and human-centered practice across divisions, ensuring easy access to tools and training that empower teams to access insight, ask the right questions, and develop the best solutions.
Coordinate immersive learning opportunities for National Gallery staff and volunteers to better understand audience needs and industry best practices.
Lead both long-and short-term projects that aim to improve experience design for National Gallery audiences, staff, volunteers, and stakeholders. Anticipate and addresses audience pain points, opportunities, and desires for innovation. Identifies ways to bring audiences into the collaborative process through iterative development practices focused on co-creation.

NF-13
For this position, specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-12 level in the federal service, writing a learning-based audience engagement curriculum for a museum or cultural institution.
NF-14
For this position, specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-13 level in the federal service, orchestrating human-centered design activities for a museum or cultural institution.
