Instructor - University of Michigan, Taubman College (Ann Arbor, MI)

Taubman College is seeking an instructor to teach one section of an undergraduate studio course focused on interaction design, currently titled "Interaction Design and Urban Experiences". The course will run during the coming Fall semester (late August - mid-December 2024) for approximately 20 students pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Urban Technology.

Taubman College's four-year Urban Technology program combines urbanism, technology, and design to help students build the know-how and determination to create digital services that improve urban life for all. The goal of our curriculum is to empower students who are conscientious citizens of the world, possess the knowledge needed to work on grand urban challenges, and recognize their own agency despite and amid the uncertainties of the contemporary world. Cities will be their domain, technology will be an essential skill set, and design will be their practice.

While this position is for Fall term 2024, there is a potential for future teaching opportunities as the program grows.

Course Description

In this studio, undergraduate students will focus on interaction design related to a core urban service. During the first half of the course, students will engage in a series of exercises to develop core competencies in visual communication principles for the design of user interfaces (typography, two-dimensional composition, color) and design competencies for interactive information spaces (task flows, information sequencing, wireframing, multi-state displays, and iterative prototyping). During the second half of the course, students will apply these skills to an interaction design challenge including discovery, definition, development, and validation.

You will lead one section of this studio alongside a second section taught by another faculty member. While the two sections will be largely aligned on content and overall structure, you will be able to develop your own lectures and exercises and will be responsible for the instruction and grading of your individual section.
