Staff Product Designer, Merchandising - Netflix (Remote @PST)

The Netflix Design team is searching for a Staff Product Designer for our Merchandising & Communications XD team. Merchandising at Netflix drives continuous engagement through highly relevant, scalable experiences that connect the right members, with the right content, at the right time. We strive to make every member feel like “Netflix gets me” by anticipating what they want and fostering deeper connections with content they love.  The person we are looking for should possess deep knowledge, and be known for...

A) Being able to effectively balance design systems thinking with the creativity needed to appeal to the tastes of every Netflix member.

B) Understanding that it’s not only important for members to easily understand the depth of choices on our service, and why it’s relevant to them, but also that these personal experiences must be appropriately scalable across regions, content types, and devices.

In this role, you will lead the creation and evolution of our merchandising design system, working across the company with cross-functional partners and stakeholders to drive the system forward, bring alignment, streamline creation, and empower innovation. You will work closely with many designers across the business, bringing both systems and merchandising design expertise to the table.

This role is ideally based in our Los Gatos offices. There is also the option to be based out of LA, or remotely from the West Coast/PST working hours. Expect to travel monthly to meet with your teams, stakeholders, and partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a critical workstream of multi-disciplinary team members - Product Design, Content Design, Operations, Product Management, Merchandising, and Research – to ideate, test, and align around principles and patterns that enable effective merchandising across Netflix

  • Define an engagement model with teams across the business

  • Work closely with the Netflix Design Systems team to design, document, and support a Merchandising Design System

  • Collaborate with teams innovating around merchandising strategy and tactics to leverage and up-level our design system

  • Create the Merchandising Design System roadmap by blending product-oriented, short-term objectives and long-term vision.

  • Determine a design strategy that reflects what Merchandising means at Netflix to our members, and inspires the business to push boundaries

Skills, Characteristics & Qualifications

  • Proven ability to lead horizontal initiatives that involve multiple teams across the business, and successful track record of executing to the benefit of all teams.

  • Experience creating or contributing to design systems, and evolving them as business needs change

  • Understands the intersection of user journeys and merch lifecycles

  • Is an advocate for the user, ensuring the balance of design that offers choices (and shows clear value) to the user vs. trying to "sell" something to them

  • Understanding of merchandising challenges, strategies, and tactics for a large and diverse catalog of offerings

  • Experience collaborating closely with cross-functional stakeholders, helping drive alignment between design and your cross-functional partners, and building strong relationships across business areas.

  • Comfortable working with ambiguity - able to bring rigorous design thinking and operational structure to complex and evolving problem spaces.

  • Exceptional communication skills, in writing and verbally, whether in small group discussions, large-scale presentations, or with executives.

  • Demonstrated ability to work on patterns across multiple UI platforms, such as TV, mobile, and web.

  • Known for high quality craft, both in the holistic design approach and detailed execution
