Digital Designer and Modeler - Karma Automotive (Irvine, CA)

The Digital Designer & Modeler - will support the design team to develop 3D data of the current and future Exterior and Interior projects.  Their Primary responsibilities are to support the Senior Director on all projects, and work with the chosen designers to model in 3D designs from 2d sketches/renderings. They will be able to sketch model exterior and/or interior designs for evaluation of volume and proportion, and also be able to work the projects all the way through to delivering concept, pre-production and production-ready design solutions.

Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

  • Support and develop 3D models of Exterior & Interior Design proposals according to design brief.

  • 3D Sketch modeling in Alias and/or Blender or equivalent

  • Interface with designers, engineers, and suppliers.

  • Be able to create and provide high-quality surfaced data for internal teams and outside-vendors.

  • Produce animations and movies of their data where applicable.

  • Work with viz team to create high-res images

  • Attend Design and Engineering meetings.

  • Issue resolution and negotiation.

  • Support on Interior/Exterior programs when needed.

  • Support 3D printing inhouse – via Form Labs machines

  • Support Powerwall and VR activities

  • Other duties, as assigned.

  • Support A-class surface development and release.

Required qualifications

Experience / Education:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in developing digital alias models.

  • Experience in working with design & engineering.  

  • Understanding of 3D as it relates to CAD.

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in automotive design or related field (Industrial/Product Design) preferred (equivalent in extensive experience considered).

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Adobe Suite, MS Office Suite.

  • Autodesk Alias, Maya 3D, or Blender modelling.

  • Visualization through rendering software (Blender, Vred, etc.)

  • Design for manufacturability knowledge.

Work Environment: To be located in the Karma Design Studio, Irvine CA. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing their job in an indoor office environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may spend approximately 60% (excluding breaks and meal periods) of time in an office environment (on site or off site) and 40% of the time in the non-office setting (garage and/or laboratory settings or off site researching). When working in the non-office setting, it requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including (but not limited to) safety shoes (unless staying outside of the working areas), bump caps, and/or safety goggles frequently. Work from home is a viable option.

Compensation:

$125,000 - $144,000 /annual salary

At Karma, our base pay is one part of our total rewards package.

Compensation offered may vary on multiple factors, including market location, education, skills and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position being offered.
