Senior Color Designer - HOKA (Portland, OR)

The Senior Color Designer at HOKA is an independent and motivated creative with a keen eye for detail, enthusiasm for problem solving and curiosity for mentorship. They report to the Color Design manager overseeing a large, complex workload that could include multiple product categories as an independent contributor OR a smaller category load as a people leader. This designer displays a strong understanding of color theory and how that translates though the lens of footwear design.

They take an active role in shaping brand color strategy on a seasonal cadence incorporating market input, trend research and brand history into their work delivering thoughtful and innovative color solutions that evolves HOKA DNA and support business needs. In addition, they collaborate with their partners on design, product development and product line management to understand project scope, construction, and material limitations. They create and maintain Merch Grids and Color CADs for their categories, ensuring the work is done accurately and in timely manner to hit deadlines and product creation gates.

Your Impact

The primary functions of this role, include but are not limited to:

Overseeing footwear color across multiple categories (and possibly designers) on a seasonal and SMU basis. Creating and maintaining color CADs, mood boards and merch grids for these projects that provide a high level of accuracy at each round of the product creation cycle. Contributing to the brand creative direction by identifying relevant trends in color materials, and finish on a seasonal basis. Translating seasonal direction into smaller color stories that meet the needs of multiple product categories and and uphold the brand creative direction. Working cross-functionally with footwear design and product development to understand material choices, design limitations and pricing goals to ensure accurate color application and execution on product. Working closely with our PLM team to ensure the creation of a cohesive range of product that meets commercial needs while bringing a fresh perspective to the brand. Create and maintain a visual line plan to insure colors merchandise across all product lines. Manage and incorporate global inputs from merch into workflow.

We’d love to hear from people with

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design, Footwear Design, Fashion or Graphic Design, Fine Arts or equivalent combination of experience

  • 7+ years of experience in color design or related field

  • Experience in performance and/or lifestyle footwear

  • A familiarity with footwear construction, materials, finishing processes and the limitations they present when coloring a shoe.
