Engagement and Communications Designer - 3X3 (NYC, NY)

3×3 is seeking a full-time Engagement and Communications Designer with a passion for social impact to support our studio’s community-centered design practice across a wide range of projects, from multi-stakeholder engagement to qualitative research and design strategy. This is a multi-faceted position ideal for someone eager to collaborate on projects that blend design, research, strategy, visual communications, and public outreach. The ideal candidate is a creative thinker that is able to wear multiple hats. The candidate shall have excellent communication skills, including facilitation experience, an understanding of project and knowledge management, and client-facing communication, and should be enthusiastic about conveying creative ideas through both visuals and writing. The candidate should be able to travel to different neighborhoods in New York City for stakeholder engagement depending on project needs.

The day-to-day:

Research and Engagement

  • Assist with developing creative research frameworks and methodologies that answer defined questions.

  • Design and facilitate public events and workshops that connect inputs with outputs with clients, community members, and community-based organizations.

  • Coordinate with community partners, ethnic media outlets, and other outreach methods like flyering and tabling to recruit diverse constituents for research and public engagement programs and workshops.

  • Develop strategies for place-based outreach materials, including content and messaging.

  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative research through methods ranging from interviews, focus groups, and surveys.

  • Lead collaborative synthesis activities to distill critical insights.

Design

  • Design place-based engagement kits, including collaterals, content, and messaging.

  • Brainstorm, visualize, and prototype digital and analog design concepts.

  • Develop program workflows and user journeys for service design projects.

  • Create evocative storytelling methods to communicate the design of programs, services, and projects through writing, frameworks, and presentations.

  • Develop project deliverables including presentations, reports, or strategy documents.

  • Design graphic elements (e.g. logos, icons, brand guidelines, infographics).

  • Create reusable graphic templates, and modify and resize existing graphics for various platforms and uses based on branding guidelines and specifications. 

Event Coordination 

  • Coordinate the production of events from liaising with partners and vendors including managing scheduling, securing in-kind contributions, and overseeing relevant content development.

  • Facilitate events when necessary, using your subject-matter expertise to field questions and prompt discussion. 

  • Monitor event participation to improve event strategy.

  • 2-3 years of professional experience and Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Design Management, Architecture, Transdisciplinary Design, Communications or related field (or equivalent work experience);

  • Competency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign and Illustrator, and experience utilizing other creative tools such as Keynote, Figma, Miro, etc.

  • Working understanding of Community-Centered Design or adjacent public interest design and design justice approaches and eagerness to contribute to a passionate team and workplace invested in rethinking methods and approaches to design.

  • Cultural sensitivity and fluency and ability to work effectively across disciplines, experience levels, working styles, and other cultural differences.

  • Ability to facilitate in virtual and physical spaces and establish connections with diverse stakeholders.

  • Strong critical thinking and analysis skills, and the ability to quickly synthesize information into patterns, trends, and insights.

  • Clear written and oral communication skills to articulate and present ideas and present concepts, including drafting communications collaterals, reports, and plans. 

  • Ability to multitask and work collaboratively in dynamic and ambiguous project contexts.

  • Fluency in one of the ten New York City non-English languages: Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Bengali, Haitian Creole, Korean, Arabic, Urdu, French, and Polis. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.

  • Experience in community engagement for the public sector is a plus.

  • Experience working with diverse communities and local organizations in NYC is a plus.

Compensation

This role will be compensated on a monthly basis. Compensation is commensurate with experience and time commitment with a total compensation package ranging from $69,000-82,000, which includes:

  • $60,000-$72,000 base salary 

  • Annual bonus

  • Health care contributions

  • 401(k) contribution
