The Workplace Design Manager plays a critical role in orchestrating groundbreaking interior architectural designs and standards for Genentech’s workplaces and non-lab environments. This pivotal position in the design and planning of workspaces, including new buildings and upgrades across the entire Genentech portfolio. By collaborating with both internal and external networks, the Workplace Design Manager ensures that the latest technologies, best practices, and standards are seamlessly integrated, guaranteeing safe, sustainable, inclusive, and impactful environments for Genentech’s diverse workforce.

The Workplace Design Manager partners with the Workplace Strategy & Integration team to align interior spaces with business requirements, ensuring that they not only support desired business outcomes but also facilitate key work practices. Moreover, close collaboration with other Site Services organizations is crucial to ensure the effective operation and maintenance of interior environments. Furthermore, working closely with the Site Services Workforce Services team is vital for developing and designing campus amenities and shared spaces. Through coordination with the Design & Construction Design Engineering team, the Workplace Design Manager maintains cohesive and innovative design standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Project Technical Analysis & Design Guidance:

  • Guide the Design & Construction, Workplace Strategy & Integration and Real Estate Strategy teams in executing office and related projects, focusing on interior design, materials, furniture, and finishes

  • Balance the art and science of interior design, integrating aesthetics, performance, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability to build captivating interior solutions

  • Collaborate with external architectural service providers, furniture vendors, and contractors to seamlessly implement interiors projects, ensuring the highest standards are met and delivering exceptional results

  • Ensure projects consistently align with Roche/Genentech standards and incorporate them into a comprehensive and cohesive strategy that sets the standard for excellence in every aspect of interior design

Lead and Subject Matter Expert for Interior Design Guidelines:

  • Define and develop site-specific interior architectural design standards, including furniture and finishes, setting the bar for innovative and inspiring workplace environments

  • Champion the adoption and adherence to Interior Design Guidelines within the Workplace Strategy & Integration team and Site Services partners, driving a culture of excellence in interior design

  • Stay ahead of the curve by researching and integrating new industry technologies and concepts while providing comprehensive training to elevate the internal staff's standards

  • Maintain and update design standards for design firms, partners and clients

  • Direct special projects aimed at elevating campus interiors, ensuring consistency and quality across the site.

Technical Leadership & Industry/Network Engagement:

  • Be the foremost site expert in interior architectural design, leading the charge for ongoing development and innovation

  • Proactively engage with the Roche Engineering Network, EHS Ergonomic team, and external industry organizations to stay at the cutting edge of standard methodologies and innovations

Skills & Expertise:

  • Leverage exceptional experience as a seasoned workplace interior designer or interior architect with a strategic attitude and a proven collaborative approach

  • Showcase outstanding communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills to unite teams and drive the vision forward

  • Construct compelling business cases for work environment projects, applying strategic thinking, problem-solving skills, and agile decision-making capabilities effectively

  • Demonstrate proficiency in workplace technologies, with an expert-level command of workplace project scope, design, and construction

  • Exhibit significant experience in project management and a high degree of familiarity with various approaches and tools

  • Apply strong collaboration skills and a track record of effectively working with leaders, peers, and vendors to rally support for shared goals and achieve outstanding results

  • Display resilience, adaptability, and the ability to navigate through ambiguous situations with ease

  • Convey a deep passion for optimizing work performance and enriching the employee experience, creating environments where employees thrive

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in Architecture, Interior Design, Interior Architecture, or a related field; advanced degrees (e.g., M.Arch or other) or certifications (e.g., LEED AP, NCIDQ) preferred

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in corporate interiors and workplace interior design

  • Proficiency in the Google collaboration suite is preferred

  • Consistent track record of leading complex projects and client relationships

This role will be based on our South San Francisco campus, requiring on-site presence a minimum of three days per week.

Benefits

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $132,100 - $245,300 USD Annual. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
