We use the term “design” throughout this job description. We believe design can mean many things depending on people’s exposure to and experience with it. At its core, it is the ability to conduct research to understand how people navigate a challenge, identify common patterns, and develop solutions that best meet peoples’ needs. We encourage you to apply even if you are not academically trained in design.
the role
At Civilla, you’ll center equity while leveraging your research and design experience to support our project work. In this role, you will:
Conduct qualitative research, develop insights, and design in complex service environments to improve peoples’ experience using public services.
Design simple and usable solutions that demonstrate a deep understanding of people’s needs. This includes solutions ranging from printed materials and digital services to policies and processes.
Lead an approach to research and design rooted in equity, building meaningful relationships with the people who are most impacted by your work and checking personal biases and assumptions.
Work with marginalized communities and build relationships with people from diverse socio-economic and geographic backgrounds. Individuals with personal experience navigating public services (such as public benefits, unemployment insurance, and the child welfare system) are strongly encouraged to apply.
Model quick learning, optimism, and a willingness to roll up your sleeves and join a team that’s helping to change the way our public-serving institutions work through human-centered design.

Design skills: Experience working alongside colleagues and client teams to design, test, and deliver solutions that meet people’s needs. Have familiarity with best practices in visual design, and the hands-on skills to create printed media and digital services (such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Salesforce etc.)
Project management: An understanding of how to scope and execute research strategy for complex projects. The ability to manage and adapt timelines, effectively prioritize, and deliver on a variety of responsibilities within a larger project plan.
