Design Associate, Landscape Architectural Designer - JIMA Studio (Detroit, MI)

JIMA Studio is a small but dynamic landscape architecture and urban planning firm that collaborates with community groups, organizations and builders committed to culturally relevant placemaking and strategic implementation. We centralize participatory design methods to provide full site design and planning services, from idea to implementation. Our team is passionate about designing environments that enhance the natural beauty of the landscape and improve the quality of life for the communities we serve.

We are seeking a talented and motivated Landscape Architectural Designer (Design Associate) with 3-5 years of experience to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in landscape architecture and a passion for design excellence, sustainability, and critical thinking. This position offers the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects across the country. The expected start date is mid to late September 2024.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with team and project partners to develop design concepts and plans for various landscape projects.

  • Prepare detailed landscape design drawings, including site plans, planting plans, hardscape designs, and construction details.

  • Conduct site analysis, including the assessment of existing conditions, topography, soil, and vegetation.

  • Create 3D models, renderings, and visualizations to communicate design ideas to clients and stakeholders.

  • Facilitate and support community engagement events to build consensus around design ideas.

  • Coordinate with clients, contractors, and other design professionals to ensure project goals and deadlines are met.

  • Conduct site visits during construction to ensure design intent is being implemented and address any on-site issues.

  • Stay current with industry trends, best practices, and sustainable design principles.

  • Communicative - We rely on strong communication to get our projects done (asking questions, following up etc.)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from an accredited program.

  • 3-5 years of professional experience in landscape architecture or related field.

  • Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), and Microsoft Office/Google Workplace. Experience with GIS and 3D modeling software is a plus.

  • Strong graphic and visualization skills, with the ability to create compelling presentations and design documents.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Knowledge of plant materials, construction methods, and sustainable design practices.

  • Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
